The problem
I wanted halftones for print and poster work where every dot is an editable shape, not a flattened picture.
The approach
A Python command-line tool does the conversion, with a small local web app on top to adjust and preview. The tests render real output and check what the dots actually cover, so a rendering bug fails a test.
What was built
A command-line tool and a local web app that output halftones as vector shapes you can open and edit in Affinity. I use it to finish the illustrations on this site.
Proof points
- Output is vector: the dots arrive in Affinity as editable shapes.
- Covered by automated tests, including tests that render the output and check coverage.
- A render test caught a real bug, and the fix is covered by a regression test.
- Private by design: it sits behind an e-mail-code sign-in, so I show screenshots only.
